There are many different ways to find out which trends are going to be the hottest of the season. First, you can keep an eye on all the fashion houses as they strut down the runways all around the globe. With fashion weeks hitting major cities like New York, Paris, Milan, and Berlin, designers show off their collections for the upcoming season, often setting the tone for what we will see on the racks in stores. It’s the trickle-down effect from runway to mainstream.
Another way to spot what’s hot is to check out your favorite fashion bloggers, style icons and celebrities on the Internet. The web is full of fashion resources and inspiration, and it’s often one of the easiest ways to track and collect your top sources for style.
But because fashion trend sleuthing can become quite the time-consuming task, I took it upon myself to find some of the biggest trends to keep an eye an for in 2016.
Last year, we saw a lot of ‘70s-esque off-the-shoulder tops, leaving shoulders exposed in a romantic, ruffled way. Back in 2016 but with a new twist, the bare shoulder trend is chronicled here in the form of sleeve cutouts, providing an intriguing silhouette.
While “flatforms” are still having a bit of a moment (platform shoes or sandals that are flat all the way across), we see updated kitten heels in the future of fashion when trend-forecasting a little further. Spotted in this street style photograph, chic kitten heels about one-inch high are the casual footwear choice to polish any outfit with ladylike style.
After seeing Milan fashion week’s photos in this slideshow, it’s clear that stripes have staying power. Vertical or horizontal, thick or thin, stripes of all kinds will be everywhere from preppy dresses to sleek skinny jeans. A seemingly staunch staple throughout the years, stripes are updated with fresh cuts, remaining at the top of the roost.
Often lumped in with the hippie crowd, frayed edges on garments are making a stylish splash this year, and high-fashion folk are taking notes. This fashion inspiration destination listed a pair of frayed bell-bottoms for the New Year, and Jason Wu’s runway featured a green raffia trenchcoat.
Prepare for a year of unique accessories, because the palm bracelet is a crazy take on a simple piece of jewelry. As explained here, no longer will bracelets be adorning wrists. Instead, a “palm bracelet” wraps around the palm of your hand, below your fingers, adding bling like never before.
Ruffles, long skirts and Victorian styles are back from the past. Igniting romanticism with soft lines, conservative cuts and oh-so-feminine floral prints, these frills won’t have you feeling too fussy. Gucci, for example, mixed in metallic gold and black sheer fabrics, sure to remind you that the trend is most definitely from the year 2016. Check out the full collection breakdown here.
